Market Your Business on a Shoestring Budget

marketing on a shoestring budget

Let's say you want to start your own business, but you don't have a lot of startup capital to work with. Conversely, you have the capital to start the business, but not much left over to market it. What do you do? After all, don't you need some funding up front, or at least some starter capital in order to get your business off the ground? What's the point of even starting your business if you can't afford to get the word out about it? Well as it happens, with the right techniques and just a little bit of effort, you'll be able to market your business on a shoestring budget.

1) Define Target Market

The most inexpensive way to effectively manage your marketing campaign is to figure out where you want to focus it. You can save a lot of money by avoiding a blanket marketing campaign that tries to appeal to too many people, or tries to grab the attention of someone who isn't interested at all in your product. Far too many people think they just have to market to everyone possible, but that's time wasted marketing to people who actually have a higher chance of being interested in your niche. After all, you wouldn't market lawn care services to people who live in apartments, would you? Pick a niche, do some market research to figure out what kind of people buy from that niche, and focus on them. You can expand once you feel more comfortable, but for now, stick with what works.

2) Online Techniques

After you figure out where you want to target your marketing, you then need to learn the best ways to get through to them. The Internet is a fantastic way to get through to them, as you'll probably have some sort of online presence to work with anyway. Start writing articles that show your knowledge and impart some vital information to your prospects, and they'll start to trust you and realize that you know what you're talking about. Be sure to write informative, quality content, or else people won't go any further than just glancing at your articles, because they just didn't take you as an authority on the subject matter. Start a free blog to practice building a following and a reputation before you start the business proper, so you can have a ready made customer base all set to go. This way, once your business is established, the power of your name alone is enough to make people believe in the products or services you are providing. They'll have read your informative content and believe that you know what you're talking about.

3) Website

Once you write the article, what do you do? Well, you create a backlink for it to your main website, which should also be optimized for search engines, using what we call SEO. SEO involves placing keywords in the body of your articles and your website, in order to catch the people who search for those keywords in search engines and point them to your web presence. What's more, you should make sure your website is easily readable, and don't get too caught up in slapping keywords everywhere – that will make Google de–index your website, and it won't show up at all, which can kill your business. Be sure to not let your fixation on SEO hinder your writing – it's just meant to get people to notice your business; the quality of your writing and your well designed website will be what makes them stay and eventually give you money for your product or service.

4) Inexpensive Business Cards and Postcards

Now that you've got the online portion of your marketing campaign out of the way, you should focus on offline marketing as well – after all, not all of your customers will get to your website through the Internet. People in your area might want to take advantage of your product or service too, believe it or not. The cheapest way to get the word out offline is through cheap postcards and business cards, which you can easily find and order. They don't cost much, but give you a lot of space and time to present potential customers with the essentials of what you can do, and how to contact you.

5) Networking

networking with people

Finally, the most effective and inexpensive way to market your business on a shoestring budget is by networking. Just get in touch with people who are interested in those kinds of products and services that you offer, or get to know the people who can connect you with potential customers. Either way, all it takes is some small talk and easy conversation, and you'll have profited! You really can't go wrong with attempting some networking – you can even get help from other people who are marketing in your niche. Just do a little cross–promotion, and you can both reap the benefits of the customers who shop at both of your businesses!

Hopefully, with the help of the above information, you'll have gained a better idea of how to market your business on a shoestring budget. Far too many people get discouraged when they want to start a business, because they don't know how to do it on a tight budget. Fortunately, it really is possible to let people know that your business exists and how your business products or services can help others, and it just takes a little bit of energy and effort!
